During my 25 years of smoking I tried to quit many, many times, you could say I got into a habit of quitting. I would find the ‘will power’ to stop and in my heart of hearts I really did want to quit. I now realize that It wasn’t the conscious mind that I had to convince… It was my unconscious that needed to grasp the idea that I or ‘we’ needed to quit. I had never thought before that your mind is made up of three distinct parts, The Conscious, The Personal Unconscious and the Collective Unconscious. And you need to treat the three as three different entities. If you want to change you as a person, you need to have all three of your fellow ‘minds’ on the same side. You need to communicate with your subconscious and get it to believe the same thing as you. I now believe that there are certain ways that you can communicate with your subconscious minds. Here is a list of states that I believe allow you to communicate with your subconscious and influence it.

  • Hypnosis
  • Meditation
  • Fasting
  • Drugs
  • At the point of waking ( hypnopompic stateĀ  )
  • At some crisis or other deep emotional state.
  • Auto Suggestion (Self Hypnosis)

Around the time of me stopping smoking I was extremely ill with a chest infection – I can remember clearly thinking that I felt so ill that I could actually die. I remember grasping deep down into my conscious and talking to myself to say this cannot go on, smoking is damaging my body and I will not let this happen anymore. I felt a strange wave of emotion through my body and instantly knew that I was never going to smoke again. It was a very uplifting experience, as if my soul had been touched. I believe that was the moment when my subconscious got the message and knew that for my survival I (we) had to give up smoking.
